When is the next show?" - Kay Li " The Magic Annexe's Open Day was a gateway to a broader understanding of the people behind the magic tricks. It's wonderful to see that magicians are also ordinary people, but having extraordinary ideas." - Darrell The Magic Annexe has always held special significance for me, not as a place to gather and meet like-minded folk, but because I joined during my most formative years, and this organisation has literally been a part of me and moulded me into who I am today. Our Sixth Anniversary Open Day really reminded me of just how quickly time has passed!
Having not performed in a long while, I was a bit apprehensive at first about performing in front of a crowd. However, it all turned out great in the end, and what's more, I had a good time and was reminded of why I got into magic in the first place. At the end of the day, the entire purpose of our Open Day was, in a sense, awareness building. To many Malaysians, their image of a magician is a silent person in a suit with music playing in the background, pulling out rabbits from a hat or poking long needles through balloons without them popping, without actually engaging or interacting with the audience. The audience is literally what they are, spectators to a show, only observing what is happening on the stage. This Open Day was a good opportunity to show them a much wider, more diverse range of magic, as the variety of performers each had distinct performance styles. And while we provided them with free entertainment (although it should always be noted that magicians never work for free!), they gave the opportunity for some of us to perform in front of a larger crowd and get some valuable exposure.
